How to Enjoy a Rummy Game
A Rummy game is a great
game to enjoy. It is enjoyable but not hard to understand and win.
It is challenging enough but not complicated. But in order for you
to fully enjoy games of Rummy, you should make yourself more
familiar with it before you play. Most games of Rummy have similar
objectives, which is to form melds of like cards in order to lower
your deadwood count or the value of your unmatched cards. There are
many different kinds of games considered to be part of the Rummy
family. These different games have certain similarities, such as the
draw and discard concept which means that players first draw a card
from the available piles then discard a card from their hands. Most
also involve winning strategies such as knocking, undercutting, or
going gin. The games in the Rummy family are undeniably more
exciting because of the different winning strategies involved in it.
This is because there is obviously a race to be the first to use
these winning strategies to topple the other players off the game.
In fact, some games are focused on which player gets to knock first.
Focus on Melding in a Rummy Game
If you are playing Rummy variants such as the traditional Rummy,
Kalooki, Loba de Menos, Conquian, and Panguingue, your focus should
be on melding your cards into sets or runs. Sets should consist of
at least three cards that have the same rank, while runs should
consist of at least three cards of consecutive rank and the same
suit. Players in these games should try and be the first ones to
meld their hands into these groups. Whoever completes his melds
first wins the games. Even as some of the games under this
category use tiles instead of cards, the melding concept remains the
focus of the games. The Conquian-based games, however, have the same
objective but differ a bit in the drawing aspect. This means that
when players draw cards, they should not add the cards to their
hands but should use the last discarded card and add it to an
already existing meld on the table. Aside from this, however,
there are also games that focus on meld scoring. These games include
the Mah-jong style Rummy games, as well as the Rummikub. Some other
variants under this category include the Rummy 500, the Romanian
Tile Rummy, and the Indonesian Remi. These games are considered as
meld scoring games because in these games, different point values
are awarded for different kinds of melds. Some melds have greater
point equivalents, while some have lower. Aside from the mentioned
variants, Canasta is also considered as a sort of meld scoring game.
Some people think that Canasta is a completely separate game from
Rummy, but it also has certain similarities to a Rummy game that it
is also considered to be part of the family as well as some of its
variants such as the Samba and the Burraco. These games Award
special points for melds that contain seven cards.
Focus on Knocking in a Rummy Game
There are also some Rummy variants where the focus is on
knocking. This means that the player who knocks first wins the game.
The most popular type of Rummy game, which is the Gin Rummy, is such
a variant. This means that even though your cards are not fully
melded, you can declare your unmatched cards assuming that they have
the lowest deadwood count. All Gin Rummy variants, such as Oklahoma
Gin and Hollywood Gin, are considered as Rummy variants with focus
on knocking. If you are playing these games, keep in mind that your
objective should be to knock, and every move you make should help
you get closer to knocking.
Contract Rummy: A Special Rummy Game
One popular but unique variant of the Rummy game is Contract
Rummy. Contract Rummy constitutes a newer and a different family of
games of Rummy where the first melds should have a contract that
gets more and more complicated as the game progresses. One popular
type of this game is the Progressive Rummy. But this particular
Rummy game family is also one of the richest when it comes to the
number of variants there are. It is the base of several Rummy
variants such as Shanghai Rummy, Liverpool Rummy, Joker Rummy,
Carioca, Jamaican Kalooki, South African Kalooki, Indian Rummy,
Continental Rummy, Floride Rummy, Dummy Rummy, Push, Telefunken,
among many others. These games also vary according to the number of
contracts they have.
